Nossa Senhora das Merces
Nossa Senhora das Merces Elevated: 28.5.1635    Feast: Sunday on/after 8th September History: Built in 1630, the original Chapel founded by the Jesuits was erected into a parochial church on 28.5.1635 along with the churches of Seraulim and Betalbatim. The Child Jesus (Menino Jesus) is venerated in this church with special devotion. Architectural notes: • Mannerist Neo-Roman style
• Large size, 4 bays x 3 storeys
• Frontispiece with inscribed motif is flanked by animal reliefs
• Shell-like niches above second storey
• Pilaster-Column pairing in central bay
• Single bell tower to right with tiled roof
• Spear finials, consoles at all levels
• Recently added concrete porch with round columns and spear finials |
